NEW CPT CODES FOR 2005

Flow Cytometry
Five new CPT codes replace the prior single CPT code 88180 for flow cytometry:

Technical component CPT codes
88184 Flow cytometry, cell surface, cytoplasmic, or nuclear marker, technical component only; first marker
88185 Flow cytometry, cell surface, cytoplasmic, or nuclear marker, technical component only; each additional marker (list separately in addition to the code for the first marker)

Professional component CPT codes
88187 Flow cytometry, interpretation; 2 to 8 markers
88188 Flow cytometry, interpretation; 9 to 15 markers
88189 Flow cytometry, interpretation; 16 or more markers

Immunohistochemistry
88360 Estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Her-2/neu, quantitative or semi-quantitative, each antibody, manual
88361 Estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, Her-2/neu, quantitative or semi-quantitative, each antibody, computer assisted
88342 All other immunostains, each antibody

ISH
88365 In situ hybridization, each probe
88367 Morphometric analysis, in situ hybridization, (quantitative or semi-quantitative), each probe, computer assisted
88368 Morphometric analysis, in situ hybridization, (quantitative or semi-quantitative), each probe, manual

Notes:
CPT codes shown above in red are new codes.

For flow cytometry, CPT code 88180 has been eliminated and there are separate codes for the technical and professional components; do not use -26 or –TC modifiers with flow cytometry codes 88184 through 88189.

For estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and Her-2/neu performed manually and graded semi-quantitatively (e.g. 1+, 2+, 3+), use CPT code 88360 for each antibody for both technical and professional components.

For estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and Her-2/neu performed with a computer (e.g., using Chromavision ACIS®) use CPT code 88361 for each antibody for both technical and professional components.

For quantitative or semi-quantitative in situ hybridization for Her-2/neu, performed manually, use CPT code 88368 for each probe for both technical and professional components.

For in situ hybridization for Her-2/neu, performed with a computer, use CPT code 88367 for each probe for both technical and professional components.

CMS no longer allows a 90-day grace period for switching to new or correct CPT codes. The above changes are effective January 1, 2005.
